Brad Schrum, who has served with the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department for 29 years, is now serving as the department's interim chief.
Fire Chief Dave McCarty retired last Thursday, October 4, after serving nine years.
Schrum, a native of Omaha, joined the department in July of 1978 and has served as Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Lt., Fire Captain and several local offices including president. He has also served as president of the state fire chief’s association.
The City is hoping to name a new chief by the end of the year and Schrum has applied for the Chief's position.
Speaking of the fire department, this is National Fire Prevention Week. Throughout the week, the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department has been working to educate the public on the dangers of fire, what to do in a fire emergency and providing fire prevention tips.
Firefighters have also been delivering pizza while checking smoke detectors.
Alliance grade school children have also been enjoying fire truck rides.
