Editor's note -- The following story appeared in the Oct. 4 edition of the Hemingford Ledger newspaper:

“Carpe diem. Seize the day, a quote mom lives by. On Tuesday, August 14, when she and Michaela were in a car accident, we knew she would fight to seize each day.”

These are the words that greet you when you visit the www.caringbridge.org website set up for former Hemingford Public Schools teacher Karen Fastnacht.

Through the website, the Fastnacht family continues to update concerned friends and family on Karen’s condition.

The October 2 entry said that the day marks the seventh week since the accident. Karen had a good night and has had her eye open. More doctors will be in to evaluate Karen.

As a teacher, Karen has touched the lives of much of the Hemingford community. As she continues to fight, the community has come together in several ways to help Karen and the Fastnacht family.

A fund has been set up at the Hemingford Community Federal Credit Union, for the Fastnacht family. Those wanting to make a donation to help defray costs of medical expenses can drop off donations at the Credit Union, or mail them to: Hemingford Community Federal Credit Union, Attention Fastnacht family; P.O. Box 991; Hemingford, NE 69348.

Most recently a benefit auction and soup supper has been organized. The “Karing for Karen,” benefit auction will be Saturday, October 27, at the Box Butte County Fairgrounds.

There will be a silent auction beginning at 10:00 a.m. and a soup lunch/supper will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. A large item auction will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Anyone wishing to donate items for the auction can contact Bruce Winten at (308) 487-3996 or (308) 487-3325 or Heath Solberg at (308) 487-5458 or (308) 760-6600. Items are needed by October 22, and an auction list is posted at http://www.bbc.net/karingforkaren

Co-organizer Bruce Winten said that there will also be an opportunity for farmers to donate grain in which the funds from the sale of the grain will be donated to the Fastnachts. Details are still being worked on.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be matching $1600 for the Karen Fastnacht Benefit.
