Unicameral Ag Committee Chairman Phil Erdman of Bayard says it's too soon to know what recommendation the panel will make on a proposal to move the Nebraska State Fair.

A consultant Monday told the committee that building a new Nebraska State Fair Park in a different location could top $175-million dollars, which Erdman called "a big number."

The total included almost $30 million for an arena that could seat 8,000 people, about the same amount for a new horse-racing track and grandstand for racing fans, and millions more for exhibition buildings and livestock barns.

UNL and a group of Lincoln business leaders want to move the State Fair and use the existing site for public and private research facilities and the Unicameral earlier this year ordered the $150,000 study.

Monday's hearing was the first time anyone had heard the study results, and Erdman said afterwards that the numbers appeared "somewhat overwhelming" to the committee and the roughly 100 members of the public who attended.

The Agriculture Committee will hold a second public meeting next month to hear what the consultants think it will cost to upgrade the current State Fair Park to make it the ideal setting for the fair.

Erdman says a public hearing would follow sometime before December 15th when the Ag Committee will decide on a recommendation for next year's legislative session. Erdman says if the committee can come to a recommendation, it will make one.
