Sandhill Oil of Hyannis has been honored by The Compassionate Friends as a recipient of the 2007 Compassionate Employer Recognition.
The Compassionate Friends is the world’s largest self-help bereavement organization, providing support and friendship to families that have experienced the death of a child. This year 81 employers across the country are receiving Compassionate Employer Recognition for going above and beyond the normal policies of most companies in helping an employee after the death of a child.
Robin Jameson, station manager of Sandhill Oil in Hyannis, was contacted by phone to inform her of the award. She was shocked. When speaking to the rep she thought she was undeserving because all employers would have done the same thing. This is not true, they replied, there are very few employers that go above and beyond.
Sandhill Oil was nominated by Kim Foreman after her son, Mitch Foreman, died on June 12, 2006. Foreman wrote, "Robin went above and beyond when she did everything she could to support me and my family during a very difficult time. This began before our son Mitch died. He was having a lot of problems in his life and needed counseling so she gave me the time I needed for that. When he went to treatment in Dec. Of 05, quite suddenly, she told me to go and be with my son." Foreman continued, "Christmas time is an especially busy time so this was a great sacrifice on her and other fellow employees to cover for me." "She gave me additional time off to move our son to Omaha to a ¾ house and get him established there." "When he died tragically on June 12th she and another friend from work were some of the first to come over that night and listened to me, compassionately, as I poured out my soul." She told me that I could come back to work when I was ready and even then work only a few hours if needed. My job would be waiting for me." Foreman concluded, "Before I returned to work she would call me to see how I was doing. After returning to work she was a compassionate friend listening to my brokenness."
The criteria for Compassionate Employer Recognition include:
1. Policies that reflect a compassionate attitude toward bereaved parents, siblings, and grandparents.
2. Additional time off beyond the familiar three days.
3. Flexibility in work assignments and evaluation of job performance.
4. Providing support services and /or time off to obtain counseling or seek a support group
5. Other acts of compassion
When a child dies, families begin a grief journey that follows them through all parts of their lives,: said Patricia Loder, Executive Director of The Compassionate Friends." Today the need for support in the workplace so often takes a back seat to the demands of the marketplace. We are pleased that Sandhill Oil is among those 81 employers, large and small, public and private, that are being recognized for providing the compassion and understanding that is vitally needed in the bereavement process."
Eighty-one employers, representing 33 states, are being recognized the Board of Directors of The Compassionate Friends for showing extra sensitivity to bereaved employees following the death of a child of one of their employees.
This is the seventh year for recognition of employers, with recipient jumping from three the first year, to the current 81 for 2007. Employers being recognized range from small companies with as few as two employees to large companies with as many as 250,000.
Nebraska has five businesses recognized this year: Nashua Corp., Omaha; National Research Corp., Lincoln; Sandhill Oil, Hyannis; United States Postal Service, Chadron; Western State Bank, Waterloo.
The mission of The Compassionate Friends is to assist families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age and to provide information to help others be supportive.
