Compassionate Friends, the world’s largest self-help bereavement organization, Wednesday morning formally presented Chadron Postmaster Sue Spangler and her staff with its 2007 Compassionate Employer Recommendation.
Only 81 employers across the country are being recognized this year for going above and beyond the normal policies of most companies in helping an employee after the death of a child.
The Chadron Post Office was nominated because the way its staff helped clerk Pat Mracek deal with the death of her son, Sgt Corey Mracek, who died while serving in Iraq in 2004.
Spangler says she's prouder of the receiving Compassionate Friends award than of any other she's been connected to in her Postal Service career because of what it says about the type of people she works with.
Spangler and the Chadron Post Office were nominated for the Compassionate Friends award by Pat Mracek, who is a member of the group's Scottsbluff chapter.
Mracek is trying to organize a northern Panhandle chapter based in Chadron. She needs five members to do it, and is confident she'll get at least that many.
The Compassionate Friends chapter organizing meeting will be next Tuesday, April 17th at 7 p.m. at the Prairie Pines Retirement Center in Chadron.
